Welcome Pilgrims, Tourists, Students and Friends

2010 is a special year in Santiago de Compostela, the political and cultural capital of Galicia celebrates its second Xacobeo (Jubilee) or Holy Year in the 21st century and the last one in the decade.  Next Holy Year won't happen until July 25th - the day of the city's patron (Santiago Apostol) - falls on a Sunday. This event will happen again 11 years from now, in 2021.

I intend to share my experience as a foreign resident in Santiago de Compostela during Holy Year.  I hope to provide pilgrims and tourists who visit the city during the Jubilee with helpful information on places to stay and eat, reviews of heritage sites, museums, cultural events and nightlife, as well as commenting my own view on local customs, traditions and folklore.

Welcome and enjoy!

CHRISTMAS IN SANTIAGO

My first holiday season in Santiago arose some feelings of nostalgia.  This was the third year in a row that I spent Christmas in Spain, literally thousands of miles away from my home country (Mexico), but the first one in which nobody from my family came to visit.

However, after the initial state of blues, I was open to explore what the Galician city had to offer this time around - from the smell of roasted chestnuts in the main "ruas" (streets) of the historical center, to the whiteness of the Christmas lights in the plazas, and the cozy environment at the multiple bars and coffeshops full of students, residents and tourists alike.
